Edwin Cheney’s Blues

March 22, 2014

taliesin_101This is what I’ve been working on this week. Read more about what happened at Taliesin here.

On the train from Chicago to Wisconsin
Edwin Cheney said to Frank Lloyd Wright
Maestro, my heart is a numb muscle
A stupid pump that rattles in the night

I know that death is but an illusion
And there’s nothing more to us than bone and spit
I know this world is but a lousy contract
I haven’t got the wherewithal to quit

So I will accompany you to Taliesin
To poke through the cooled ruins of your life
Where I will claim the corpses of my children
And leave you with the body of my wife

“To live outside the law you must be honest”
I’ve heard that quote attributed to you
You guys went on your spiritual hegira
Left me with these Edwin Cheney blues”

I know, Frank, that you are a great artist
Due all the things your genius can command
So I will stand beside you on the platform
And before I leave, I’ll smile and shake your hand

Laws and rules are for the average
Not for the brave and spiritually austere
I know I was privileged just to be your client
I’ve paid your fee, now I’ll disappear

Laws and rules are for the dull man
Not for the brave and spiritually austere
One can’t expect the angels to attend to
the tuneless grief of some bald engineer

“To live outside the law you must be honest”
I’ve heard that quote attributed to you
You guys went on your spiritual hegira
Left me with these Edwin Cheney blues”
