Stand My Ground

February 26, 2014

Two years ago today George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin to death.

You think you know my story
You saw it on the MSNBC.
Things might have turned out different,
If they’d let me in that damn academy.
But I ain’t a good test taker,
I guess I got a little A.D.D.
(Kids, don’t burn that marijuana
It messes with your short term memory.)

Now Tom Cotton, he was sayin’
How they can use their food stamps to buy steak.
And Obama gives ‘em iPhones,
While the working man just can’t catch a break.
Sometimes I get so angry,
Listening to the radio, I shake.
But I didn’t do no felony:
Maybe I just made a sad mistake.

They gave me back my pistol,
My black Kel-Tec PF-9
I ain’t James Franco in Spring Breakers
But I’m proud to call the little honey mine.
You know he was a total stranger
I’d never before seen him hanging ’round
I never saw what hit me
But I know I’ve got a right to stand my ground.

Like I told the operator
He looked like he’s about to B&E
He was cutting through the houses
And he walking a little bit too leisurely
I got on the radio, they asked his 20
And so I got out to see
When he weaponized that sidewalk
I swear I thought that it was either him or me.

I can prove that I’m not racist
I even took a black girl to the prom
It don’t matter to Al Sharpton
But I don’t give a rat’s ass where you’re from
There’s people who belong here
And people who just want to take your stuff
You’ve got your punkish element
And guys like me who’ve finally had enough.

Maybe Tray was in the wrong place
I know I’d never even heard his name
It was hard to tell with that hoodie
But I think he looked a little like The Game
I know I have a right to be here
And there’s a reason that we live behind these gates
I know that fear is the great corrosive
And that he is lost who hesitates

You know he was a total stranger
I’d never before seen him hanging ’round
I never saw what hit me
But I know I’ve got a right to stand my ground.
