Win a Boxxle! It’s easy! Why? Because we love you!
March 2, 2013I’ve got an extra one of these. So if you want it leave a comment below. We will choose one of you guys at random (don’t ask how) and ship it to you at our expense. (Unless you live in Little Rock. Then you’ll have to come and pick it up.)
What is a Boxxle you say?
Well it’s a handsome stainless steel and black plastic appliance for dispensing bag-in-box beverages. Like boxed wines. It is designed to sit on top of a counter or bar, but because Karen doesn’t think it’s quite as handsome as I do — she thinks it looks like a toaster — it lives under my bar on the top shelf. That is pretty much the perfect height for the covert filling of wine glasses.
Most of you have either already embraced box wines or regard them as gauche. From my point of view, the bag is simply superior technology for a certain kind of wine. (Wine doesn’t age in a bag — you don’t want to be cellaring your Black Box.)
Bags keep wine fresher longer than opened bottles (in a bag wine can stay fresh for up to six weeks after “opening”), they’re lighter and easier to carry than an equivalent bottle. And they’re self-resealable, which means there’s almost no waste.
Even though there are all kinds of wine-saving technologies — from vacuum pumps to gas injectors — once I’ve pulled a cork on a bottle I pretty much feel obligated to finish it. Box wine solves that problem, but creates another.
The boxes look declasse. Sometimes — especially when they’re almost drained — they’re awkward to use.
I have often defended box wine in this space. I would not call myself a box wine enthusiast, but I have found a couple of reasonable brands that I go to again and again and I’m open for suggestions. I am at that somewhat uncomfortable point in my exploration of vinoculture where I’ve discovered a general, but real correlation between the price of a bottle of wine and my enjoyment of it.
But just because I like expensive wine, I don’t like it that much more than some inexpensive ones. If you hang out at our house long (or late) enough, you will — whether you realize it or not — probably drink some wine that came from a box. We keep a box of Pinot Grigio in the refrigerator and something red — right now a zinfandel — in the Boxxle under the bar.
Ready, set, go. We’ll announce a winner on March 18.

I’d love to have one of these. I mostly do drink boxed wines. Thanks for the chance to get one – appreciated.

Oh and to get those last few drops out – turn the box upside down and open the valve – I can usually get an extra glass that way

I coveted one of these when I read the original review in the Dem/Gaz. I saw the contest on Facebook so I guess you could say I was a “long-time listener. First time caller. Couldn’t let Kat have this fine piece of technology without a contest. Keep up the good writing Philip.

I’m not a wine snob but I cried when I lost custody of my Mouton Picasso label and my Lafite. They would be decent reds by now. I’m known to buy a box, in another town, if no one is looking and if they put it in a Wal-Mart bag. I agree that the quality of boxes is improving and I like fresh. I still feel like a butt drawing a glass. I would love to win because I’m gradually taking my kitchen stainless and this would make my wife quiver. May the best man win.

If you replace “wine-saving” with “erectile dysfunction”, you’ve got a pretty fair infomercial.

What a cool and practical invention! I am currently enjoying a nice 2011 Mendoza Argentina Malbec via Black Box. I can’t help but think a Boxxle would make it even better!

I am frugal my nature, which helps explain my long-term use of box wine. My wife is the opposite, but does enjoy box wine. Of course, it has to be the most expensive box wine available. Still trying to make sense of her logic. So, a Boxxle would be nice to have to protect my significant other’s expensive vice. Plus, I’m too cheap to buy one.

In addition, my typing skills would most likely prevent me from purchasing one online. As you can see from the fist sentence of my comment above, I typed “my” instead of “by”. It is frighteningly obvious that I deserved the “D” I received in 11th grade typing.

Would love to have a Boxxle to store and dispense my box wine. I love, love, love my box wine and this would be the perfect way to drink it. So please add me in the drawing!!

I too sneak a box home now and then but even a Black Box elicits a long ‘sigh’ from the loving partner. This could solve that problem, or at least change the sigh to a quick ‘snort’…….

I would love to have one of these to dispense my Black Box wine from! Maybe my friends will give box wine a try.

One of these would sure look sweet atop my bar, and I’m certain I wouldn’t have to hide it underneath.

I think the boxxle is great ! I am going to Italy soon and will be enjoying some pretty good wine over there. When I come back, nothing would be better than to hear that I have been given this great looking wine costume for the poor little box wines that never get any respect.

As I am the only one in the house that enjoys red wine, it is usually a box verses a bottle for me. Thank you for the opportunity to win one of these boxxles.

Uh oh — we often keep opened bottles of wine around in the fridge for, um, a long time before finishing them off. Are we just used to drinking stuff that’s stale? Bleh! Seems like we should move UP to boxed wine…
Comment by mffishdog — Mar 4,2013 at 2:11 pm
That would be so much better than hiding it in a diet coke can…

I love boxed wine because they are enviro-friendly, usually cheaper than bottled, doesn’t occupy too much space in my bar and last so much longer. We love you too!
Comment by Steph N — Mar 4,2013 at 4:23 pm
I’ve been drinking more boxed wine recently, too, both because I don’t often have enough company to take care of a whole bottle and because of the cost.

Tired of Two Buck Chuck and having to mix my wine with 7Up. I understand that a glass of red wine daily helps your heart so this item would actually be helping to increase my lifespan. A longer lifespan would allow me to read your articles for a greater length of time, during which I would continue to rate your columns, blogs, etc. highly thus generating more traffic to your site(s). The higher number of hits would translate into a Pulitizer Prize sooner rather than later.
Thank you for allowing me to help.

As a connoisseur of box wines (NOT), I usually keep a box in the fridge. The Boxxle would give a fresh look to gatherings and would impress my guests. This is really neat accessory. Wish I would have thought of it. A Toaster!…er, Toast to the inventor!

It’s time to end the déclassé prevalence once and for all. Fighting against this travesty is what my charge is and continues to be.

My husband doesn’t drink wine–just because if he’s going to subject his stomach to the reflux, he prefers a nice Belgian ale. I can’t finish a bottle of wine by myself. If I do, please keep me away from the video cameras. So I love boxed wines for having around the house. Even when I air-pump and recork an open bottle, it never tastes right to me the next day. All too often, I experience that familiar glug-glug of vinegary Cabernet being poured down the sink. That’s not right. I need a Boxxle. It’s not that my kitchen’s too classy for boxed wine packaging, it’s that if I had a Boxxle it’d be the best looking thing in my ugly, ugly kitchen. C’mon. You know you want to make a difference in the world.

I need a Boxxle but not because I’m ashamed of the box wines. I too am the only wine drinker in the house, and it is not a pretty sight when you have to finish a bottle by yourself. I like the Bota Redvolution for a nice light summer red blend. Kudos to the inventor of the Boxxle! I hope he makes a million.
