DVD of the week: Mary Pickford The Muse of the Movies

June 22, 2012

Our pick of the week is this fascinating 101-minute documentary by Nicholas Eliopoulos, which traces the life and career of America’s first movie sweetheart largely through primary sources. Through restored vintage audio recordings, Pickford narrates her own story along with actor Michael York. Classic film clips, rare home movies, and cameo interviews with Adolph Zukor (founder of Paramount Studios), aviator Amelia Earhart, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Lillian Gish, Buddy Rogers (Pickford’s last husband), as well as the only interview ever given by Pickford’s daughter, Roxanne Rogers Monroe.

The DVD, from Cinema Libre, retails for $19.95.
